At first I was thinking it could be a prison..... but maybe it was a watch tower to prevent the enemies from crossing the river, at that point at least.
Looks like an old school duck house that some feudal Lord had built. Nothing says "Trespassers Beware" like the threat of being nibbled to death by a badelynge of ducks.
That is COOL! if you look at it the two windows look like eyes the lower window looks like a mouth and the growth on either side looks like hands kinda like Mccauly Culkin in Home Alone ;)

Top pic, They built the castle in the wrong spot, they didn't know that the big flood would come. So your just seeing the top of the castle. The fishies are swimming thru the rest of it.. Greenbow
